History was made at St Mary’s Primary School as it proudly hosted the very first primary schools archery competition — a thrilling head-to-head showdown against Poyntzpass Primary School.

The atmosphere was electric from the first whistle, as both teams demonstrated incredible focus, determination, and skill across four fiercely contested rounds. Each end brought cheers from teammates and supporters, with arrows flying true and scores remaining tight throughout the evening. It was a showcase not only of talent, but of composure under pressure.

Round after round, the young archers rose to the challenge. St Mary’s displayed consistency and teamwork, edging ahead with steady scoring and nerves of steel. Poyntzpass responded with determination and accuracy, ensuring the competition remained exciting right to the very last arrows.

In the end, St Mary’s emerged victorious, proudly lifting the coveted “Merida Cup”, while Poyntzpass secured a very impressive and well-earned second place finish. Both schools can be immensely proud of their performances in what proved to be a landmark event for primary school archery.

A special highlight of the evening was the dramatic battle for Archer of the Night. Congratulations go to Conor Gormley, who claimed the title after a nail-biting one-arrow shoot-off that had the entire hall holding its breath. His composure and precision under pressure made for a truly memorable moment.

Archery coaches Maria and Mary Kate expressed their pride in all of the children, commending them for their outstanding sportsmanship, positive attitudes, and encouragement of one another throughout the competition. They also extended heartfelt thanks to the parents whose enthusiastic support helped create such a special atmosphere.

This inaugural competition will certainly be remembered as the beginning of an exciting new chapter for primary school archery — a night of teamwork, resilience, and sporting excellence that set the bar high for competitions to come.
